CERITACERITAKU.COM – The Story of Wali Songo Sunan Giri, Spreading Islam Through Children’s Toys – Sunan Giri is the son of Sheikh Maulana Ishaq. His mother was named Dewi Sekardadu, the daughter of King Menak Sembuyu who was none other than King Blambangan.
Sunan Giri is also known by the names of Raden Paku, Muhammad Ainul Yaqin, Joko Samudro, and Sultan Abdul Faqih. There is a history of its own for each name it has. One of them is the origin of Joko Samudro.
It is said that when he was a baby, Sunan Giri experienced exile by his grandfather, Prabu Menak Sembuyu. As quoted from the Book of the History of Islamic Culture, Prabu Menak Sembuyu was jealous of the success of his son-in-law (Syekh Maulana Ishaq) in spreading Islam in Blambangan.
Sheikh Maulana Ishaq decided to return to his original place, Aceh because his existence was threatened. At that time Sunan Giri was still in the womb. After being born, King Menak Sembuyu vented his jealousy on his own grandson. He put Sunan Giri into a chest and threw him into the sea.
While at sea, Sunan Giri was found by a rich merchant who was sailing, his name was Nyai Ageng Pinatih. Then he was made an adopted son. Because the baby was found in the sea, he was finally given the name Joko Samudro by Nyai Ageng Pinatih.
At the age of 11 years, Sunan Giri was brought by his adoptive mother to a boarding school to study with Sunan Ampel in Ampeldenta, Surabaya. There he got a lot of knowledge from his teacher.
Told in the same book, Sunan Giri was asked to continue the business of his adoptive mother to trade. However, he prefers to spread Islam and establish a boarding school.
Sunan Giri is known for his Islamic preaching style. He taught a lot of his students through children’s games. The games he made and are still famous today include Jelungan and Cublak-cublak Suweng.
